4. Plug your electronics and other non-essential items into a power strip. Using a power strip allows you to power down all the devices connected to it so that they do not unnecessarily use power in modes such as STANDBY.
5. Turn off your computer and monitor when they are not being used. Contrary to popular beliefs, turning them on and off will not cause damage. If you are away from your computer at different intervals, make sure you have set the power saver options to optimize your energy saving efforts.
6. Air dry dishes rather than the heated drying cycle.
7. Wash cloths in cold water. This not only reduces hot water usage, but it is better for your clothing as well.
8. Use compact flourescent bulbs to light your home or business. An ENERGY STAR qualified compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) will save about $30 over its lifetime and pay for itself in about 6 months. It uses 75 percent less energy and lasts about 10 times longer than an incandescent bulb
9. Take short showers instead of baths. The amount of water heated and used for shower is significantly less than that of an average bath.
10. Buy products that bear the ENERGY STAR seal. All ENERGY STAR products meet strict guidlines set by the Canadian Deptartment of Energy.
