5 Steps to Help Prepare Your Home for Spring and Summer

After a long, cold, and tedious winter, who doesn’t love the arrival of spring? It’s simply wonderful to feel the warmth of the sunshine on your face and watch those spring flowers start to bloom. This is also the time of year when many of us like to start spring cleaning. We dust all those hard-to-reach places, get rid of items we no longer use, and spruce up our homes to welcome in the new season. But how often do you think about a spring clean for your appliances?

Between furnaces and ducts that have been in use for several months to your air conditioner that will kick into action soon, there is so much more to do! Follow our five-step guide to make sure your home is in tip-top shape for the season ahead.

Schedule Your Furnace Maintenance

Are you one of those homeowners who turn off their furnace in the spring and forget about it until the fall? Spring is a great time to schedule your furnace maintenance. For a start, the fall can be a busy season for furnaces, and you might be waiting several weeks for an appointment. Not to mention that if your furnace breaks down, you might experience delays in getting it fixed, and you don’t want to be left in the cold.

When you schedule your furnace maintenance in the spring, you can make sure that everything is in good working order. If any repairs need to be done, you can fix them early, ahead of the peak season. Then, when you turn on your furnace in the fall, you are all ready for the cold weather and are unlikely to experience any hiccups along the way.

Don’t Forget The Ceiling Fan!

Chances are that it has been a while since you’ve turned on your ceiling fan. Don’t wait until the hottest day of the year to turn it on. Test your ceiling fans to make sure they are in good working order and ready for the summer—make sure to dust them off first!

If you don’t have a ceiling fan, you might want to consider having one installed. Ceiling fans are a great way to cool down your home and are much cheaper to run compared with turning on the AC. We’ve installed a lot of ceiling fans in the area, and the homeowners are always happy.

Consider Installing An Air Conditioner

Alberta summers can be long and hot. While sipping on the ice water might help, an air conditioner really improves your comfort in the home or office. For homes, you might consider a stand-alone unit for certain rooms. Alternatively, you might consider a central air system to cool your whole home or office.

If you are looking to install an air conditioner, it is important to check that your electrical system can accommodate a new system. Central air conditioners and even stand-alone units consume a lot of electricity, so panel upgrades may be needed.

Test Your Landscape Lights

Your landscape lights may have been buried under the snow and out of view for several months, which is why it is important to test them out in the spring. While most landscape lighting systems are not affected by bad weather, older systems are subject to wear and can degrade. Testing your lights lets you know if any of them need repair or replacement before summer is in full swing.

Install Outdoor Lighting

After being indoors for an extended period of time, it is nice to be able to go outside and enjoy the nice weather. Enjoying summer evenings, talking and laughing with friends and family under the stars is what we love about Alberta’s summer nights.

You can extend your time outdoors by installing outdoor lighting. Outdoor lighting can include flood and spotlights to light up specific areas or mood-setting lowlights and pathway lighting that makes it easier and safer for guests whilst making their way to and from your door. Outdoor lighting solutions also include security lighting to help deter theft by making your home and property more visible.
